·        Nationally - Founded in 1977 by Father Paul Sheridan, S.J., Boys Hope Girls Hope is a privately funded, non-profit, multi-denominational organization that provides at-risk children with a stable home, positive parenting, high quality education, and the support needed to reach their full potential.

·        Baltimore - Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baltimore opened our home for 6 boys in May 2002 in the former convent of Our Lady of Pompei Catholic Church. In January of 2007, we completed the construction of a new home for boys. The home serves 8 young men in residence.  With completion of the girls house in the summer of 2010, we have a residential program for 8 young women as well.

·        Other locations – Boys Hope Girls Hope serves children in 40 homes in 16 U.S. cities (San Francisco, Orange County (L.A.), Phoenix, Las Vegas, Denver, Kansas City, St. Louis, Chicago, Denver, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Baltimore and New York) and 4 Latin American countries (Guatemala, Brazil, Mexico and Peru)

 

·        Funding

·        Private vs. public – Boys Hope is a 100% privately funded organization relying on the financial support of each individual community for their support.

·        % toward kids and overhead – Currently Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baltimore spends 80% on direct service to kids, 10% in administration and 10% in fundraising.

 

·        Key Features & Strengths

·        Year-round residential care provided to each scholar

·        Financial and Emotional Support through College Graduation - Long-term Commitment to each child coming into the home.

·        Partnership with private, college preparatory schools in the community – Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baltimore currently has scholars attending Loyola Blakefield, Archbishop Curley, Cristo Rey Jesuit, Mother Seton Academy, Midtown Academy and St. Michaels.  Scholars have attended Boys Latin, St. Ignatius Loyola Academy, Mount St. Joe, St. James and John, St. Catherine’s and Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the past.

·        College-educated house parents staffing the home.

·        Partner in Parenting – Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baltimore partners with each child’s biological parent or guardian to provide a team approach to supporting each scholar through adolescents, teenage years and into young adulthood. Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baltimore supports the families of our scholars in addressing their shortcomings through parenting support, encouragement and support of sobriety, full-time employment and independence.

 

·        The Scholars

·        How are they identified – Children are identified through a combined effort of the local staff and local Program Committee which is made up of local educators, social worker and a psychologist along with a few members of the community. We engage the Baltimore City public schools and social service agencies to educate them on the type of children we serve

·        Qualifications-kids, parents and family

·              Should be between the ages of 10 and 14 at the time of admission. Older students should be considered base on academic record and desire to participate.

·              Academic potential to succeed in college-preparatory program

·              Will benefit from a long-term, value-centered nurturing residential setting

·              Does not exhibit serious emotional/behavioral problems and does not have severe learning disabilities. Is not a user of drugs and/or alcohol.

·              Has the ability to relate positively to others in a group setting.

·              Understands and accepts the expectations of Boys Hope Girls Hopeand chooses to become a BHGH student.

·              Family is supportive of child’s participation in the program.

·        Screening process

·              A personal interview will be arranged between the referral agent, Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baltimore, the student and their family.

·              Application Submitted

·              Academic and Immunization Records

·              Letter to the Board requesting consideration

·              Psychological and Academic Testing is arranged

·              Visit by the student and family to the program

·              Following Testing and the Visit, the Program Committee of the Board of Directors determines a student’s acceptance into the program.

·        Number of kids – The Boys Hope Girls Hope model serves 8 scholars in residence in each home with full-time, live-in staff supported by part-time, live-out staff. 

 

·        The Program

·        Expectations –

1.      Maintain a 3.0 GPA in a private school setting

2.      Complete 100 hours of community service annually

3.      Maintain 2 extra-curricular activities throughout the year

4.      Work part-time from 16 years old and beyond and full-time in the summer from 15 and beyond

5.      Worship at a Church of their choice each weekend.

6.      Practice respectful behavior and good decision making

 

·        Faith based – Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baltimore is a multi-denominational program accepting children of all faiths with the expectation that a faith and spiritual life will be explored and pursued through a scholar’s time in the program.

·        Community service – Each scholar is expected to participate in the monthly community service projects coordinated by the staff and to identify a nonprofit organization to volunteer with personally on a monthly basis.

·        Extra curricular activities – Each scholar is encouraged to pursue their personal interests of activities through extra-curricular involvement in their respective schools or in the local community. We expect each scholar to maintain 2 extra-curricular activities throughout the year.

·        Summer program – The Summer Program at Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baltimore focuses on preparation for college through the College Road: College Preparation and Success Program.   A combination of Boys Hope Girls Hope coordinated programs and other summer camps along with employment provide the framework that will allow our scholars to explore their personal interest (sports, theater, music, science, outdoors, etc) while gaining the experience of being on college campuses and developing the skills to be independent, yet successful upon time for college. The Summer Program also provides an extensive amount of exposure to college campuses through College Visits by the high school aged scholars. The Baltimore program requires 5 college visits each year of high school as a means of determining what is the best college to attend when the time comes. We focus on geographic location of the school, size, diversity, curriculum, costs and potential for acceptance as areas to focus on in assessing the right place to attend college.

 

·        Baltimore Program Update – Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baltimore currently serves 8 young men, 8 young women and 12 collegians.

 ·        Baltimore BHGH Results – Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baltimore has enjoyed the success that our National Program has maintained for many years, 100% of our high school graduates go on to college. Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baltimore’s first graduating class finished high school and all are attending college (Boston College, Haverford College, Loyola University of Maryland, Frostburg University, William and Mary College, and Morgan State University). 4 of our collegians are st to graduate in the Spring! 

 

·        “How do I get Involved” Alternatives

·        Financial donation – Donations can be made online, by check, but preferably in person while visiting our amazing new home for dinner.

·        Mentoring/Tutoring – Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baltimore is always looking for mentors and tutors for the young men in our home. We have a family mentoring program which provides each scholar with a family to support them through their time in the program. We ask for a long-term commitment and that the home be a traditional family environment so that our scholars can learn the role of husband and father of a household. Our tutoring program supports our scholars academically and due to the difficulty of their school work, we ask that tutors commit to a minimum of once a week for continuity purposes.

·        Dinner visits at the house – One of the greatest aspects of being a family is sharing dinner together. Dinner at the boys’ home is served at 6:30 pm each evening and is an amazing opportunity to experience our warm and welcoming home and scholars.

·        Home, clothing, services donation – As with any home with teenagers, clothes, games, and household items are much needed. Now multiply that times 16 and that is our situation at Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baltimore. We can always benefit from the donation of household items and athletic equipment and games. Our teenagers are just like yours and want to pick out their own clothes. Therefore, consider a shopping day with one of our scholars allowing them to purchase clothes of their desire, yet appropriate (outlined by the house staff and well aware by the scholars) or gift cards or donations towards clothing is always much appreciated.

 

 

·        Volunteer – Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baltimore is committed to exposing our young men to great people. Whatever your gift, our young men can benefit from meeting good people and we welcome your involvement in our organization for the benefit of our scholars. Whether it is tutoring, mentoring, cooking dinner for the house, driving scholars to school and/or activities, we always need volunteers. We need electricians, plumbers, carpenters, landscapers, spring cleaners, carpet cleaners, interior designers at various times throughout the year to keep the home running smoothly and efficiently. Please consider serving an amazing group of young men as they pursue their dream of college.
