Our History

Overview
Founded in 1977 by Father Paul Sheridan, S.J., Boys Hope Girls Hope is a privately funded, non-profit, multi-denominational organization that provides children-in-need with a stable home, high quality education, and the support they need to reach their full potential. Many of our children come from caring families unable to meet the child's needs because of poverty, violence or dangerous neighborhoods.
Boys Hope Girls Hope is currently serving children in 30 homes in 15 U.S. cities and four foreign countries: Brazil, Guatemala, Peru, and Mexico.

Boys Hope Girls Hope comes to Baton Rouge
In 1993, Boys Hope Girls Hope of Baton Rouge (BHGHBR) was founded to serve children-in-need in the Greater Baton Rouge area. Initially, the home for boys opened on Government Street in 1996. In July 2004, Boys Hope Girls Hope was able to expand the program, when we received a generous donation of 53 acres and a house in Central, Louisiana.
The boys lived at the Government Street house until Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana in August 2005. The male Scholars moved to the Central home to allow the girl scholars from New Orleans a place to live. In February 2007, BHGHBR began renovations on the Government Street home, newly designated for girls-in-need. With contributions from Friends of Hope, a women’s philanthropy group, and other local donors, BHGHBR opened its home for girls on July 16, 2007.
