As noted throughout our website and as represented in much of our printed material, BHGHNY’s partnerships with Catherine McAuley High School and with Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School represent the very bedrock of its programming. In each case, our girls and boys attend schools that genuinely care for their welfare and the academic, moral and social development of their students. In each case, BHGHNY works closely with school leaders, educators and with key administrators to ensure that its resident scholars are advancing appropriately in all areas of their lives.

As a five day urban boarding school program, BHGHNY provides its scholars with a safe and supportive school campus. Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School is located in Brooklyn’s historic Fort Greene neighborhood and is surrounded by a community that is rich in its diversity, history, architecture and social landscape. Catherine McAuley High School is located in Flatbush, Brooklyn—a vibrant West Indian community that is beginning to distinguish and identify itself as a new and emerging cultural expression—one that enriches us all.

At BHGHNY we maintain high standards for our scholars and expect that they engage fully in the life of their schools. Our programmatic menu of goals and objectives is being organized within a block schedule of after school electives, projects, clubs and courses. Additionally, we have scheduled sixteen Saturday sessions to further enhance our efforts and to provide a coherent approach that promotes remediation when needed, acceleration when warranted and enrichment when possible.

During the 2011/2012 academic year, BHGHNY scholars will be required to make a commitment to their health and wellness and overall physical fitness. Specific programs will be developed for individual participants. Scholars will be guided in the process of determining their own physiological constitution and the subsequent considerations that will be reviewed and discussed while promoting better health and wellness decision making. Training in Tai Chi, Yoga and aerobics will be offered as additional complements.

As stated earlier, BHGHNY scholars are encouraged to participate fully in the lives of their schools; however, opportunities are limited and to further support its scholars a complementary schedule of additional programs will be structured in three eight week cycles. Scholars will pursue a range of interests that include film-making; the production of a newsletter and a literary magazine; a walking tour of Brooklyn through some of its more noteworthy neighborhoods; animation, invention and model building; leadership development; and a series of service learning projects.

BHGHNY believes that service learning projects must be connected to “real” opportunities to learn. For example, scholars will work with the leadership at YES SOLUTIONS, an organization that provides meals and shelter for many of NYC’s homeless, on special projects that will require exposure to many of the concrete outcomes, causes, and costs that are associated with NYC’s homeless and how these conditions can be addressed and resolved through a more robust network of service providers. Furthermore, BHGHNY scholars will work closely with U.S. Park Rangers and with New York City Park Officials on larger projects geared towards the protection, maintenance and care of some of Brooklyn’s surrounding parks and nature reserves. Again, a special emphasis will be placed on the learning phase of this work as scholars gain a better appreciation and understanding of why green spaces are are so important. A complete list of all electives and course offerings will be posted to this page just prior to Labor Day

To ensure that its scholars receive the academic support they need, BHGHNY counselors and educators oversee a mandatory and structured study period each day. These sessions are closely monitored and should a scholar require additional assistance in a specific subject area, efforts are made to secure a tutor while working with school deans and individual teachers.

Commenting on scholar achievement and responding to demonstrated deficits is an extremely important feature of BHGHNY’s overall service base. Each scholar is assigned an individual counselor and advisor. Advisors communicate with other BHGHNY staff on a weekly basis to assess a scholar’s broader contributions to the program. Depending on the circumstances, scholars and their families can receive up to eight formal communications during the school year. Additionally, advisor & parent/guardian meetings are scheduled once each semester. Lastly, a level system is used at each campus to determine what privileges are extended to what scholars. These determinations are made every two weeks thus ensuring that scholars receive regular and structured feedback regarding their efforts.

As a college bound prep program, BHGHNY engages its scholars in a grade-appropriate series of programs, workshops, tutorials and campus visits to instill in each the premise that preparing for college admission is an ongoing process requiring specific benchmarks and milestones to reach. After graduation from secondary school, BHGHNY continues to support its collegians with tuition assistance and general guidance. The most important dividend for BHGHNY to realize is the eventual graduation from college and successful entry into the workforce of each of its scholars.
